How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?
That sentiment on the front page of the Mirror in London today pretty much sums up how the other 56 million people--who voted for John Kerry--feel today. Could it be a mistake? Nope. At least the
Global Vote got it right, with Kerry defeating Bush with a resounding 77% of voters worldwide. If that doesn't give old George W. pause, I don't know if anything will.

Election Heating Up
With the presidential election just seven days out, everyone seems to be paying attention. The Washington Post coined a new ailment on Monday, "Pre-Election Anxiety Disorder," an ailment affecting a lot of Americans.
The cover story for Time magazine in Canada this week is a cross-border perspective on the election, "Our Take on America," and features results from a new poll that suggests Canadians are scared to death about the election:
"Canadians are expressing a strong dislike of President George W. Bush and dread at the possibility he may win again...The election, the poll suggests, is making Canadians feel at once fearful and powerless. Remarkably, the poll also finds that Canadians believe the U.S. election will have a greater impact on Canada than the Canadian federal election last June." According to the pollster, "'Canadians are outright scared stiff- perhaps beyond any rational response-that a Bush election is a path to wrack and ruin...I think they're near apoplectic at the prospect.'"

The Bizarre Bush Bulge
So what's the deal with George W.'s mysterious back hump? President Bush says "a poorly tailored shirt" caused the unusual bulge on his back during the first presidential debate. In another quote, he called it simply, "my spine." Check out these stories:

Elections: 12 Days Away
Read my Op-ed in today's Daily Free Press at Boston University about
the real curse of the presidential election: student apathy.
"LET ME SEE if I have this right. The Republicans are now accusing the Democrats of being insensitive to gay Americans? Or to one gay American at least?" Ellen Goodman has a
fantastic piece in today's Boston Globe about John Kerry's Mary Cheney/lesbian gaffe in the last presidential debate.

Vice Presidential Debate in Cleveland
John Edwards kicked slammed down Dick Cheney tonight in Cleveland at the only vice presidential debate in this election. At points, I could see steam coming out of each candidate, and at times I needed to reach for my paper bag because I was hyperventilating with excitement.
Gwen Ifill was quite the moderator, cornering both candidates: Edwards on trial lawyer career and his lack of governmental experience, and Dick Cheney, on his connection with Halliburton. She brought up gay marriage. John Edwards eloquently explained his opposition, but praised the Cheneys' careful handling of the situation and his public comments about the matter, remarking that they clearly love their daughter. To which Dick Cheney declined to rebut, simply thanking John Edwards for his praise of his family. It was a stunning moment.

Ifill also brought up AIDS in America, specifically among black women, who make up one of the fastest growing demographics in the epidemic. Both candidates diverged from the question and addressed AIDS in Africa instead. John Edwards brought it back a bit, but Gwen didn't seem impressed with their answers. It was a similar situation when she brought up poverty in Cleveland, which is the nation's poverty capital.
The perspective of a successful, black woman moderator was fantastic; she brought up a number of hard questions that a rich, white man never would have and pressed the candidates unsparingly.

Canadians for Kerry
That's what the
headline in The Globe and Mail read today. Is this a surprise?
"A Leger Marketing poll conducted Sept. 21-26 indicates 56 per cent of Canadians supported the Democratic candidate, compared with 19 per cent who backed U.S. President George W. Bush."
"Mr. Kerry's strongest support in Canada came from Quebec, where 69 per cent of respondents said they preferred the challenger, the most pro-Bush province is Alberta.
"A majority of Canadians thought Mr. Bush's re-election would have a negative impact on global peace."

Democratic National Convention
This is my first time covering a national political convention and it's alternated between being boisterous and rather anticlimactic. As I wrote in an
article for the Canadian audience this week, all the madness at the FleetCenter and around Boston, locking down roads and shutting off highways, seems like a lot for a glorified pep rally that really has little function for the race beyond energizing the troops.

Still, it was invigorating to be in the midst of thousands of cheering Democrats who, importantly, seem to have a strong grasp on the world's concerns that the United States is bullying its way around the Middle East. The buzz on the convention floor--most of the time--was energizing and enlivening.
Highlights of the week included former President
Slick Willy, Barack Obama and Al Sharpton, with his fantastically
articulate criticism of George W. One of the high points for me was seeing
Teresa Heinz. I'm absolutely enamoured of her. I'm also smitten with
John Edwards, even if he does have a horrible accent.
John Kerry finally showed some aggressiveness in his acceptance speech, and hopefully his fervor can continue even after the convention adjourns.
I suppose the best way to summarize my excitement over John Kerry's speech is to post two text messages I swapped with my friend Ed last night:
(As John Kerry slam dunks George W.)
Ed: Girl sure knows when her homework's due!
Me: Oh my god, I need a paper bag. I am hyperventilating.
