Race to Deliver

My friends Donny, Sean, and I ran the Race to Deliver the other day in Central Park. Here we are, looking devilish after the race (hence the mess of a hairdo).

Photos from Maine

I took this photo the other night on the North Shore promontory overlooking Penobscot Bay and the Camden Hills. A blurry night shot cannot begin to capture the beauty of this spot!

North Shore sunset

...And this one as the North Haven ferry slipped out of her berth en route to Rockland yesterday morning.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving from Maine! It was a summer-like afternoon yesterday as I snapped this shot of one of the Dumpling Islands in the Fox Islands Thoroughfare on the ferry ride from Rockland to North Haven.

Where the hell is Calgary?

Great news! Lufthansa is starting to fly to Calgary from Frankfurt. But unfortunately they seem to think Calgary is in British Columbia. This error is slightly more egregious than the Alaska Airlines Columbia/Colombia debacle I blogged about last year.

A castle wedding

I spent the latter part of my trip to the Czech Republic at Zbiroh Castle, 60 km outside of Prague, for a wedding. The wedding was to-die-for and the castle itself was amazing (especially the stuffed rabbit hanging over the bar in the restaurant, shown below)! Formerly the headquarters of the Czech intelligence agency, Zbiroh has since been renovated into a quite civilized hotel.

Below, at a wine tasting in the castle's cellar with the fun and fabulous bride and bridesmaids, I apparently missed the red memo.

After the rain

The forecast this week called for rain (and snow) every day. Luckily, when the rain stopped and the sun made a brief appearance, Prague's architecture seemed to glow.

Prague pics

Prague is truly a city of architectural contrasts. Swooping into the city, I had a sinking feeling in my stomach as I gazed out at the endless rows of Soviet-era housing and institutional architecture that skirt the city. Luckily much of the downtown core retains its historic roots with gorgeous detailing and patinas; the same cannot be said for the dingy Radio Free Europe building (one time headquarters of the Czechoslovakian Communist Parliament), below/right, reminiscent of Boston's boxy city hall.

Certainly the coolest modern structure in Prague is Frank Gehry's "Fred and Ginger" Dancing House, below/right.

Praha

After sitting around the terminal at JFK for an excruciating seven hours on Monday afternoon, hoping to hop on an earlier flight to Europe, I finally took off on my planned Lufthansa flight to Prague late in the evening. An uneventful eight hours later, and I was meeting up with my sister in Prague's Stare Mesto (Old Town) for coffee and croissants at the fantastic Bakeshop, a popular cafe created by a San Francisco expat. Unfortunately as soon as I got to Prague the rain and clouds arrived. Just as we stepped onto the uber-popular Charles Bridge to take in the views of Prague Castle, below, it began bucketing.

Gone far, far away

I've gone behind the Iron Curtain for a few days. BRB.

The Golden Horseshoe from space

From Richard Florida's blog comes this neat view of Toronto (on the top, with the city's Yonge Street spine clearly defined) and Buffalo (on the bottom).

Buffalo, Buffalo, Buffalo

Recently two fascinating articles were published profiling the rise and decline and future of Buffalo. Both "Can Buffalo Ever Come Back?" from the
New York Sun and "Buffalo bets on" in the Toronto Star provide excellent perspectives on Buffalo's depressing decline from a 580,000-strong city in the 1950s to today's city of fewer than 300,000 souls.

Buffalo is undeniably a city of good bones. But as the author of the Sun essay points out, that is part of the reason why Buffalo might never reclaim its glory days. The city is physically far too large for its population, and any growth one might dream of. It simply can't fill out its vastness. He writes, "The best scenario would be for Buffalo to become a much smaller but more vibrant community—shrinking to greatness, in effect. Far better that outcome than wasting yet more effort and resources on the foolish project of restoring the City of Light's past glory."
